The Voice Behind the Code: Why AI Isn’t the Answer

We love a collaboration! Thanks to Rich O’Donoghue @ io Audio for penning this article about the pitfalls of using AI voiceovers…

As a business we [io Audio] work closely with voice artists, agencies and directories to create voice demos that showcase the artists skillset to the best of their ability. It’s important for us to get to know the artist prior to script writing so we can not only pull out their vocal talents but also their personality and what makes them, human!
We have a team of professional script writers who work in areas such as commercials, gaming, animation, radio and narration etc. By having this input from various areas of the industry the scripts showcase voice over trends and writing styles for each genre. Our writers get to know each artist prior to script writing via Zoom, emails, audio, websites and personal profiles so they have a rounded vision of who they are, what they sound like and what they can do as performers.
Why do we work with professional script writers and not just use library scripts! Or heaven forbid, Chat GPT? Because we can target the subtle nuanced performances that bring out all the human qualities of the artist! It takes a pro script writer to sit down and listen out for what makes a voice unique and highlight this in their script writing. Not only that but just 1 script can be tailored to pull out several emotions, industry trends and techniques used in a performance i.e. close mic’ed and intimate OR story telling and dramatic, something AI cannot do!
With the tailored approach to script writing along with expert direction and fun collaboration in the booth, we get to enjoy the magical moments when a voice over gives their best performances. Performances that show true human connection with a script and convey all the subtle emotive expressions and animated body movements that go to create a recording, that ultimately ends up on a voice demo or a real commercial! Try getting this out of an AI prompt … I don’t think so!

I’ve worked with hundreds of voice overs in the last 20 years and what stands out is not only their passion for their artform but the diverse range of personalities who each bring their own unique human sound to our industry. We might be able to train robots to sound like us, but we can’t train them to express a lifetime of human learned experience, along with emotion and animated body movements into 1 script! The cat is out of the bag, and we must learn to adapt and live with the technology. I think it’s also our responsibility to educate the end client, sales teams and none – creatives who may be thinking of using AI to save money!

Clients need to be educated about the pitfalls of using AI voices so they can make the right decision to use human voices in the first place, ultimately saving them money in the long run.
